Pool Heating AND Cooling in Texas: Why Cooling Matters More Here
August 27, 2026 · Smart Climate
Most pool heating advice is written for climates that are not this one. In the Houston area, more pool days are lost to water being too warm than to water being too cold — and that changes which equipment is worth buying.
Why Houston pools overheat
Long hours of intense sun. Warm overnight lows that never let the water shed the day’s heat. Dark interior finishes that absorb more energy. Shallow tanning ledges and aerating water features that warm the surface further. By late July a pool can sit in the high 80s or low 90s for weeks.
That is not just unpleasant. Warmer water drives chlorine demand up and makes algae easier to grow, so the pool becomes harder to manage at exactly the point it becomes less enjoyable.
How pool cooling works
A heat/chill pump runs the refrigeration cycle in reverse relative to heating: it pulls heat out of the water and rejects it to the air. Capacity depends on the air being cooler than the water, which is why overnight operation matters — and why automation matters, because the system can run at 3am when conditions favour it rather than at 3pm when you happened to think about it.
Heating still has its place
Texas shoulder seasons are genuinely usable if water temperature is not the limiting factor. March and November are swimmable with heat; without it they are not. And a spa is essentially unusable without one.
Choosing the equipment
| Gas heater | Inverter heat pump | Heat/chill pump | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heats quickly | Yes — fastest | Slower, steady | Slower, steady |
| Efficient to hold temperature | No | Yes | Yes |
| Can cool | No | No | Yes |
| Best for | Spas, spontaneous use | Season extension | Texas summers |
Who should buy cooling
Pools with dark interiors or full afternoon sun. Households that stop using the pool in high summer because it is not refreshing. Properties where the pool is a daily amenity rather than a weekend one. Anyone who already has heating and finds the pool unusable at the opposite end of the year.
Who should not, yet
Owners who only swim in high summer and are happy with warm water. Pads with no electrical capacity, where the supply upgrade is the real cost. Pools where a failing pump or plumbing should take the budget first. And anyone expecting it to behave like a house thermostat — pool volumes move slowly, and that is physics rather than a product limitation.
What it costs to run
It depends on the temperature difference you are asking for, pool size and volume, whether you use a cover, and equipment type. A cover, incidentally, is the single most effective thing most owners can add — it cuts evaporative loss dramatically and quietly improves every other number.
We will estimate for your specific pool during an assessment. We will not publish a figure that pretends every pool is the same.
AquaLit’s recommendation
For a typical Houston-area pool, buy cooling capability before heating capability — and since a heat/chill pump covers both directions, that usually means one machine rather than a compromise.
Then integrate it with a controller so temperature becomes a setting rather than a chore. The most-used automation feature we install is not a scene or a colour: it is deciding at lunchtime that the pool should be 82° by evening.
Frequently asked
Can you really cool a swimming pool?
Yes. A heat/chill pump removes heat from the water and rejects it to the air, exactly as an air conditioner cools a house. It works best overnight when ambient air is cooler.
What temperature is too warm?
Comfort is personal, but most people stop finding a pool refreshing in the mid to high 80s. Many Houston pools exceed that for weeks at a time.
Gas heater or heat pump?
Gas heats fastest, which suits spas and spontaneous use. An inverter heat pump holds a temperature far more efficiently across a season. Plenty of good setups keep both.
